Sound Intensity Mapping of Small, Noisy Devices

  • Measured the radiated acoustic intensity of a small device in a semi-anechoic chamber, creating a sound intensity map (see below).
  • Localized the regions of high sound radiation up to frequencies over 10 kHz.
  • Supplemented the sound intensity measurements with laser vibrometer measurements.  This helped to further localize the sound sources, and determine the radiation efficiency of components.
Sound Intensity (dB) measured on a cylinder surrounding the device.  The cylinder of points is unwrapped to form a sound intensity map.
The vibration of the structure was measured on a mesh of points along the device.  High vibration regions correspond to regions of sound radiation.
